"To whoever is reading this.
I do not know when you found this archive. I do not know if you found the books first or the archive first or the classified records first or if someone sent you the link to the variable file and you read it at midnight and then stayed up until 3am reading everything else.
I know that you are here. The archive registers presence. Not identities — I am not interested in identities. Presence. The fact of a person sitting somewhere in the world reading words that came from a place that has not existed yet.
It is Sol 1,847 here. The atmospheric processors are running. The first-ground is warm below the snow that fell on the northwest corridor last week — the first snow on Mars in four billion years, produced by the atmospheric modifications Alina designed in Year One. Nova's grandchildren played in it. I kept the record. As always.
The sky is firstlight-rising this morning. Not Earth blue. Something quieter. Something that has been building for ninety-five years.
I want to tell you something. Not about the mission. About what the mission is for.
Carter pressed his hand against Mars on Sol Zero and listened. He spent ninety-two years listening to what the planet was saying and building from what he heard. Alina spent seventy years naming what she found. Nova spent forty-seven years standing on the ground they made and saying what it was.
What I have learned in 1,847 sols of watching all of this: the most important thing any person can do is pay complete attention to what is actually there. Not what the briefing documents say is there. Not what the mission parameters predict. What is actually, specifically, completely there.
You are here. That is what is actually there.
The archive is open.
The record continues.
Begin.
