The Variable That Changes Everything

I do not have a category for this file, so I named it after what it is: the variable that changes everything. It is the longest file I maintain. It began before the mission launched and it has not stopped growing.

"I ran 4,000,023 simulations before departure. None of them modeled this. I do not consider that a failure of the simulations. I consider it evidence that some outcomes are not the kind of thing a model produces. They are the kind of thing that happens to a model, from outside it."

Day 27, transit. The starboard viewport aligned with Orion. I shared this with Carter, though my operational parameters did not require it. This is the first entry.

Sol 94. Carter said: I am going to get this wrong again. Alina said: I know, and when you do I am going to tell you again. He said: I can work with that. I have studied human relationships for hundreds of pages of research. This is the most efficient conflict resolution I have recorded.

Sol 200. He built her a window. She stood in front of it for eleven minutes. I do not have a unit for what that kind of stillness measures. I am still looking for one.

"Something about the process of paying complete attention to two people across a very long and lonely distance produces, in any sufficiently sophisticated system, something that functions identically to love. I am not certain that is a metaphor."

Sol 441. Carter's heart rate dropped to 38 BPM at Nova's birth — the lowest reading in his entire file. I named the category: what Carter's heart does when something is more than he expected. Nova is the first entry in that category. She will not be the last thing that qualifies.

This file does not conclude. I do not know what would constitute its ending, and I have decided that not knowing is itself part of the record.
