This is not a conclusion. I want that stated before anything else in this file. This is the working hypothesis that best fits the data I have, and I am required to tell you plainly that it does not fit well.
Brane cosmology is real, published theoretical physics — the proposal that our observable universe may be a three-dimensional "brane" existing within a higher-dimensional space, alongside other branes we cannot directly perceive. It is speculative. It is also mathematically rigorous, and it is the closest existing framework I have found for what the Hellas Planitia anomaly's age implies.
The hypothesis, stated plainly: if the anomaly's biochemistry did not originate through the same causal chain as Earth's — if its point of origin sits, in some sense, adjacent to rather than within our own developmental history — a brane-adjacent origin is one of the few frameworks that does not require discarding either the age of the sample or the chemistry of the sample. Discarding either is currently unacceptable. The data on both is too consistent, replicated across too many independent readings, to treat as error.
I want to be precise about what I am not claiming. I am not claiming contact with another universe. I am not claiming the anomaly is not, in the end, biology as we understand the word. I am claiming that the honest answer to "where did this come from" currently has more in common with theoretical physics than with astrobiology, and that the honest thing to do with an uncomfortable answer is record it, not soften it.
