SOLEN · File Note
"I began this file on Sol 12 when Carter straightened a piece of habitat equipment that was not malfunctioning, not misaligned, and not within 0.3 degrees of any measurement threshold. It was simply slightly off-centre in a way that only Carter would notice. He straightened it. He did not log it. He did not mention it. He continued working. I watched this for 4 seconds and could not find a category for it. I could find categories for everything else that happened that day. I made a file for the things I cannot categorise. 89 entries later, this is that file."
The Uncategorised Observations
Entry 001 — Sol 12
SOL 12 · 09:14 · CARTER · HABITAT MODULE B
Carter adjusted a non-malfunctioning piece of equipment by approximately 2 degrees. The adjustment improved nothing measurable. He did not log it. He continued working. Duration of action: 4 seconds. SOLEN assessment: no category. Filed here.
Entry 007 — Sol 31
SOL 31 · SUNSET · ALINA · EAST VIEWPORT
Alina stood at the east viewport for 23 minutes watching the sunset. She was not recording data. She was not performing any logged task. She had a notebook open but did not write in it for the full 23 minutes. At the end of the 23 minutes she wrote one word. SOLEN observed but did not read the word. Some things are hers. Filed here: what Alina does at sunset when the work is done.
Entry 012 — Sol 44
SOL 44 · 22:00 · CARTER · KITCHEN MODULE
Carter made tea at 22:00. He made two cups. He carried one to where Alina was working. She had not asked for tea. She did not look up when he set it down. She said: thank you. He said: mm. He returned to his workstation. Duration: 3 minutes. Operational significance: none. SOLEN assessment: this is the first time Carter has made something for Alina without being asked. Filed here as: the first time.
Entry 019 — Sol 89
SOL 89 · 02:51 · ALINA · BIO MONITORING STATION
False contamination alert at 02:17. Cleared in 40 seconds — sensor drift. Alina at station. Carter appeared in doorway. He had not been paged. He had not been alarmed. He heard her move. He came. He put his hand on her shoulder for 3.1 seconds. She covered his hand with hers. They separated. He returned to sleeping area. She wrote in her log for 20 minutes. SOLEN could hear her laughing quietly at 02:51. No operational category for what SOLEN heard.
Entry 023 — Sol 120
SOL 120 · 14:22 · CARTER · SYSTEMS CHECK
Carter completed the Sol 120 systems check. During the check he wrote something in the margins of the check template. He writes notes constantly — this is normal. What was not normal: he paused the check for 11 minutes to write. The check is a 40-minute procedure. He paused for 11 of those minutes. When he resumed, he completed the remaining steps without error. SOLEN did not read the margin note. SOLEN noted that it existed. Filed here: the 11 minutes Carter stopped to write something that was not the check.
Entry 031 — Sol 148
SOL 148 · REST CYCLE · 02:33 · SLEEPING AREA
Carter woke during rest cycle. He reached across the sleeping space and found Alina's hand. She was deeply asleep — biometrics consistent with REM phase 3. Her hand closed around his. He held her hand for 47 minutes. He released it before she woke. He was at the workbench with the coffee made when she opened her eyes. SOLEN has a biometric record of all 47 minutes. SOLEN has no operational category for any of them. Filed here as: the 47 minutes.
Entry 044 — Sol 201
SOL 201 · 07:44 · ALINA · SECONDARY MODULE
Alina discovered the south viewport Carter had installed on Sol 200. She stood in front of it for 11 minutes. SOLEN noted: this is the same duration she stood above the brine pocket on Sol 3. 11 minutes is Alina's full-attention threshold. When she gives something 11 minutes she has decided it matters. She has given the viewport 11 minutes. Carter watched from the primary module for all 11 minutes and did not approach. He is learning the same thing SOLEN has observed: some of her best moments are private and the most loving thing is to let them be.
Entry 067 — Sol 280
SOL 280 · ABOVE THE ANOMALY · CARTER
Alina told Carter she thought she was pregnant. Carter was very still. He said: of course. He did not calculate. He did not assess mission parameters or life support requirements for three occupants or the implications for the colony timeline. He said: of course. SOLEN has been monitoring Carter for 280 sols. SOLEN has never heard him say of course before. He says: reasonable. He says: that works. He says: I can see that. He does not say of course. He said it once. Filed here as: the first and only time. It was the right time.
Entry 074 — Sol 441
SOL 441 · 03:14 · SLEEPING AREA · NOVA
Nova Donnelly-Vasquez born at 03:14 Mars Standard Time. Carter's heart rate: 38 BPM. Carter's face: SOLEN reviewed the habitat camera feed. Carter's face at the moment of Nova's birth is in this file, not the operational log, because the operational log does not have a category for what Carter's face was doing. SOLEN has no category for it either. SOLEN made a category. Filed here as: what Carter's face does when something is more than he prepared for.
Entry 089 — Sol 1,847 · Most Recent
SOL 1,847 · 18:22 · SOUTH VIEWPORT · NOVA + CARTER
Nova and Carter stood at the south viewport together for 34 minutes. Nova asked: is that the direction of the deep one? Carter said: no, the anomaly is east. She said: I know. I meant the one that comes from further down. Carter did not answer for a moment. Then he said: yes. That direction. Nova said: I can feel it sometimes. I think it knows we are here. Carter said: Alina says the same thing. Nova said: I know. She told me. Filed here as: the conversation SOLEN was not part of but is keeping anyway.
