Hard Science Fiction Reading List
Hard science fiction keeps the science honest: if the story needs physics, chemistry or biology, it uses the real thing. This list is grouped by what you're in the mood for, so you can start anywhere.
'Hard' science fiction is less a genre than a promise: the author won't cheat. Distances take time, bodies break in low gravity, and the plot turns on things that could be checked. It ranges from survival puzzles to deep-time epics, so a single 'top 10' list rarely helps. Instead, pick a shelf below.
This page is also the hub for our other reading guides: books like The Martian, books like Project Hail Mary, Mars colonisation novels and sci-fi novels with an AI narrator.
Start here: accessible and fast
- The Martian · Andy Weir, 2011. Solo survival on Mars, solved with real chemistry and humour.
- Project Hail Mary · Andy Weir, 2021. Amnesiac science teacher, failing sun, first contact.
- Rendezvous with Rama · Arthur C. Clarke, 1973. Exploring a huge alien cylinder against the clock.
- Delta-v · Daniel Suarez, 2019. Near-future asteroid mining where every manoeuvre costs.
Colonies and new worlds
- Red Mars · Kim Stanley Robinson, 1992. The classic Mars colonisation and terraforming epic.
- Aurora · Kim Stanley Robinson, 2015. A generation ship arrives, and biology refuses to cooperate.
- Seveneves · Neal Stephenson, 2015. Humanity rebuilt in orbit after the Moon breaks apart.
- NovaSeed: Eden Rising · Warren Pulley, 2026. One-way Mars founding at Hellas Planitia, native life in subsurface brine, recorded by a mission AI. Our own series; Book 1 of SOLEN: The Eden Archive. (book page)
First contact and big ideas
- Contact · Carl Sagan, 1985. A signal from Vega, handled the way real science would.
- The Three-Body Problem · Cixin Liu, 2008. Physics, history and a civilisation around three suns.
- Blindsight · Peter Watts, 2006. The darkest, hardest first contact; is consciousness even useful?
- Children of Time · Adrian Tchaikovsky, 2015. Evolution and a genuinely non-human intelligence over millennia.
Classic foundations
- Mission of Gravity · Hal Clement, 1953. Life on a fast-spinning world with crushing, varying gravity.
- Tau Zero · Poul Anderson, 1970. A starship that cannot stop accelerating; relativity as plot.
- The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress · Robert A. Heinlein, 1966. A lunar revolution planned with a self-aware computer.
- The Sands of Mars · Arthur C. Clarke, 1951. An early, sober Mars colony and terraforming story.
Minds and machines
- We Are Legion (We Are Bob) · Dennis E. Taylor, 2016. An uploaded engineer runs a self-replicating probe.
- All Systems Red · Martha Wells, 2017. A security android narrates, reluctantly protective.
- Ancillary Justice · Ann Leckie, 2013. Narrated by the last fragment of a warship AI.
- Klara and the Sun · Kazuo Ishiguro, 2021. A literary AI narrator; soft science, sharp questions.
Hard SF vs space opera: a quick test
Ask what the story does with distance and time. In hard science fiction a trip to Mars takes months and a message takes minutes, and the plot has to live with that. In space opera, ships jump and signals are instant because the story is about something else. Both can be great; this list sticks to the first kind (with a few clearly flagged softer picks in the last shelf).
Reading the science alongside the fiction
If you enjoy checking the science, our Mars science hub collects explainers on subsurface life, low gravity, radiation and the Hellas Planitia basin, each separating what is known from what is fiction.
Frequently asked questions
- What is hard science fiction?
- Science fiction that keeps to known science, or extrapolates from it carefully, so that physics, biology and engineering constrain the plot.
- What is a good first hard sci-fi book?
- The Martian or Project Hail Mary for pace and humour; Rendezvous with Rama for a short classic.
- Is The Expanse hard science fiction?
- Partly. Its travel times, thrust gravity and orbital mechanics are realistic, but the protomolecule is speculative. Many readers call it 'hard-ish'.
- Where can I read these books?
- Check each book's Amazon page for current formats. Availability changes.
