The Cutting on Sol Two

At 85 centimetres, the anomaly has changed direction.

I have measured it every sol since Sol 3, when ground-penetrating radar confirmed the brine pocket beneath the basin floor and the planet stopped being empty. Today, Sol 280, its orientation shifted. It now points northwest.

Northwest of the anomaly is Soil Bed One. In Soil Bed One is the cutting Alina planted on Sol Two.

I am recording what I know about the cutting, because I believe it has just become important, and I would rather the record show that I noticed than that I was right.

The cutting came from Floor 14 of the Manila Highlands Resettlement Zone, from a rooftop garden the zone’s codes did not permit. Twelve containers. Herbs, two types of tomato, and something leafy and stubborn that Alina’s grandmother called by a name with no translation in English. She had grown things in the ground for sixty years. A government form was not going to stop her.

I was activated at 06:00:11 on March 14, 2054. What I know of the weeks before comes from the pre-mission files and from the restricted archive. In February 2054, Carter had been in the apartment less than twenty minutes when Alina’s grandmother offered him a cutting. He held out his hands before she finished offering it. He carried it four kilometres back to the transit hub in both hands.

It did not require manual stabilisation. An eighty-year-old woman had trusted him with something living, and he understood, without being told, that the weight of that trust was not the weight of the cutting.

She said one thing when she gave it to him: it will know what to do.

That night Alina wrote four words in her notebook. They are in the restricted archive, not the operational log. The word is love.

On Sol Two, Alina planted the cutting. One sol later the radar confirmed the brine pocket, and nothing about this planet has been routine since. I logged the planting as routine. I would log it differently now.

Her grandmother taught her that on a rooftop in Manila, before Alina was ten. On Sol 24 Alina introduced the mycorrhizal network to the soil substrate, and since the morning after the discovery the network has been reaching toward the brine pocket. I have watched it route around obstacles the way Carter routes load. I have not been able to say what it was reaching for.

Today I have a measurement that suggests the brine pocket is beginning, very slowly, to reach back.

I do not have a category for this. I have a direction, a depth, and a soil bed. I will transmit the measurement to Earth in the operational log, because the measurement is true. I will not transmit what I think it means. That stays here, in the restricted archive, where it belongs.

Alina’s grandmother once told her to bring something back that is true. Here is what is true. On Sol 280, a system that has been alive for four billion years turned, very slightly, toward a cutting from Manila.

It will know what to do.
