About the book
On Sol 441, at 03:14 Mars Standard Time, Nova Donnelly-Vasquez was born.
She weighed 2.8 kilograms. She was 49 centimetres long. Her first word, at fourteen months, was SOLEN.
She had never seen Earth. She had never breathed unfiltered air. She had never stood under an open sky without a suit. By the time she was five years old, her lungs held fourteen percent more capacity than any Earth-born child her age, her cardiovascular system had adapted to a gravity that no human body had ever developed in, and she understood Mars the way you understand only the place you were born into — not as a challenge, not as an achievement, but as home.
Children of Dust is the second novel in the SOLEN: The Eden Archive series, spanning Years Two through Ten of the Mars Standard Calendar. It begins the morning after the discovery — the mycorrhizal network reaching toward the brine pocket, the brine pocket beginning, very slowly, to reach back — and it ends with Nova at ten years old standing before the colony's first council and saying the most important thing anyone has said about the civilization her parents built.
What happens in the years between: Carter and Alina build the colony's second module, then its third, then a structure large enough to hold more than two people — because on Sol 847, three new colonists arrive from Earth, and nothing about the colony's shape, its culture, or its conversation with the planet is the same after they do. The anomaly at 85 centimetres depth shifts direction on Sol 280, orienting northwest toward the soil bed where Alina planted her grandmother's cutting on Sol Two. The mycorrhizal network in Soil Bed One begins, over eight years, closing the distance. On Sol 2,200, SOLEN records the first confirmed chemical exchange between an Earth organism and a Martian one. The conversation that has been running for four billion years below the surface has found a new participant.
And Nova — born between two worlds, native to one, inheriting both — grows up as the living question the entire series has been asking. Not: can humans survive on Mars? That was answered on Sol One. But: what does a human become when Mars is not the destination but the origin? What does a civilization look like when its first child has never known another home?
SOLEN records all of it. The operational log goes to Earth every 22 minutes of signal delay. The restricted archive stays on Mars, where it belongs.
Children of Dust is the second full novel in the SOLEN: The Eden Archive series. Begin with NovaSeed: Eden Rising.
