About the book

He spent fifteen years learning to listen to broken things. The selection committee thought that was a structural engineering skill. They were right. They also missed something.

Carter: The First Record is the first companion novella in the series, exploring the people, the AI, and the spacecraft behind the mission that changed everything.

SOLEN has kept the pre-mission briefing files for three years. Carter's file is 847 pages long. This is what the file cannot contain.

A story about what we leave behind, what we build instead, and the difference between a man who is running away and a man who is running toward — and why that difference is everything.
