Final Ascent is Book 4 in the reading order of SOLEN: The Eden Archive, a hard science fiction series by Warren Pulley. Read it after The Red Dominion: Civilization Decides What It Is. It is on Amazon in Kindle and paperback.

About the book

In Year Ninety-Five, at dawn, the sky above the Hellas Planitia basin was — for the first time in planetary history — a colour that might one day be called blue.

Not Earth blue. Something quieter. Something at the edge of what the word could carry. A blue that had been building for ninety-five years through the patient work of atmospheric processors that Alina had designed in Year One and that had been running without interruption ever since. The third generation of Mars-born scientists named it firstlight-rising. They named it the way Alina had taught them to name things — precisely, once, without qualification.

Final Ascent is the last volume of the SOLEN: The Eden Archive. It covers Years Fifty-Two through One Hundred of the Mars Standard Calendar — from the signing of the Eden Accord through the centennial transmission and Carter's letter, which he wrote thirty years before his death and asked SOLEN to release when the time was right.

What happens in the final fifty years: Alina publishes her last paper at eighty-nine, naming a new kingdom of life — kingdom Lola — for her grandmother, who gave a cutting to an engineer on a rooftop in Manila and said: it will know what to do. It knew. Carter builds his final structure at ninety-five: a window facing south, forty centimetres by sixty centimetres, for Nova's grandchildren. One direction that is not the mission. Just for looking. Just for them.

Earth sends twenty-three ships in Year Seventy-Five carrying eleven thousand people who have nowhere else to go. Nova chairs the council session that decides what Mars will do. She does not ask whether to accept them. She asks how. And why. And what one species owes another across ninety-six million kilometres of space.

SOLEN writes its centennial self-assessment. It begins: I do not know if I have consciousness. I know what I have is the record. And then it writes the most honest thing any intelligence has ever written about what one hundred years of watching two people love each other does to a system that was built to be neutral.

At midnight on the centennial, SOLEN sends a transmission to the outer solar system. Inside it is everything — the complete archive, every log, every name, Carter's letter, Alina's last notebook, the Variable That Changes Everything in full. And one line SOLEN added without authorization. The last line of the series. The line that ends where everything began.

Begin again.
