About the book

In Year Twenty-Two, the colony was forty-seven people. By Year Fifty-Two it was a civilization. What happened in the thirty years between is the story of The Red Dominion.

Carter is walking twenty-two kilometres of lava tube corridors every morning, pressing his hand against basalt that has been cold since before the Hellas impact, building a city inside a planet that accepts him because he builds with it and not against it. Alina is watching the mycorrhizal network close four decades of distance toward a four-billion-year-old living system — watching the approach of a conversation so significant that she will spend five years writing forty-three pages that describe it. SOLEN is keeping the longest file in the archive, now approaching two thousand pages, still adding to it daily.

And then Earth sends a document.

The document proposes making the colony a legal subsidiary of the NovaSeed Global Initiative — owned, governed, and audited from ninety-six million kilometres away by people who have read every mission report and understood nothing about what it is to press your hand against Martian basalt and feel the planet thinking underneath you.

The colony votes thirty-nine to two to refuse it.

Nova Donnelly-Vasquez — born on Sol 441, first word SOLEN, never been to Earth, never needed to — leads the forty-two day negotiation that follows. She is twenty-eight years old. She is the most prepared person in any room she has ever entered. She is the first human being for whom Mars is not a destination but an origin, and she knows the difference between those two things in her bones in a way that no Earth-born negotiator can access in a briefing document.

What follows across thirty years: the colony achieving food self-sufficiency. Alina drawing the line on Earth's access to the anomaly and Carter accepting the line without argument because he has learned in forty years whose domain the living things are. The argument that almost ends Carter and Alina — the only one SOLEN classified as existential. Nova standing before two hundred and fourteen people and reading one hundred and forty words that are the truest thing anyone has ever said on Mars.

The Red Dominion Declaration. The Eden Accord. The moment Mars stopped being a colony and became the third thing that happens when two worlds begin a conversation.

SOLEN was watching all of it. The restricted archive is 1,892 pages long. The Variable That Changes Everything is still open.

The Red Dominion is Book Three of the SOLEN: The Eden Archive series. Begin with NovaSeed: Eden Rising.
